When the hand pump on the well serving Kochieng community stopped working, the residents would buy drinking water only. Since water was very expensive, they would use a nearby stagnant water on other activities such as cleaning, including bathing. But then they would often complain of discomfort such as skin rashes after bathing using the stagnant water.

But Lifewater Canada came through for the community by fixing the communal hand pump, and therefore giving the community members another chance to access clean drinking and washing water from the communal well.
